Ruins of Rabštejn Castle

The ruins of Rabštejn Castle lie in the Hrabětice Highlands, 2 km north of Bedřichov, on the slope of a mountain ridge sloping down into the valley of the Oskava River. Rabštejn Castle was the highest castle in historical Moravia.

From the castle itself, only small remains of the walls that led to the castle courtyard, the remains of the circular wall of the forecourt and traces of the castle moat have survived. Today everything is barely recognizable and overgrown with forest.

The ruins of the castle are located in the Rabštejn Nature Reserve with an area of 20 ha. The oldest trees in the forest are over 200 years old. Some rare and endangered plant species are also represented in the rich herbaceous undergrowth.

In the area of the nature reserve there are a number of isolated rocks reaching a height of up to 40 m. The rocks at Rabštejn are the largest climbing area in northern Moravia. The climbing terrain consists of two clusters of rocks:

  • front rocks (height of rocks 15 – 20 m)
  • the back rocks (a massif with the ruins of a castle and a height of about 37 m)

Mountaineering is allowed here all year round.
