Jeseník Water Fortress

The water fortress in Jeseník is located in the very centre of the town, east of Masaryk Square. The fortress is a two-storey, three-winged building with a small courtyard and a stone bridge over the moat by which it is surrounded. It is a defensive building, whose origin is believed to be in the second half of the 13th century.

The fortress acquired its present appearance in the years 1738 – 1745. In the years 1970 – 1982 it underwent a general reconstruction and in 1932 the Jeseník City Museum was moved here and the fortress still serves as the museum’s headquarters. There are three permanent exhibitions devoted to the history of the Jeseníky region since prehistoric times, evidence of mining, lime and spa industry, geology and mineralogy of Jeseníky and fauna and flora of Jeseníky.
