It is located above the Branná river valley, on a rocky promontory that runs from the village of Branná into the valley.Due to its location, it played an important role and its ownership was held by important noble families. In the 16th century, the Žerotín family began to rebuild the castle into a Renaissance residence, followed by the Lords of Vrbno.
At the beginning of the 17th century the Žerotín family and the Lords of Vrbno built the castle buildings of the so-called middle and lower castle. This was also the time when the Black Tower, which has been preserved to this day, was built. Nowadays the castle is partly used as a hotel.
